Father’s Day Weekend: AleSmith Brewing Hosts 3rd Annual Tony Gwynn 5.5K

SAN DIEGO (MAY 15, 2017) – San Diego’s AleSmith Brewing Co. will host the 3rd annual Tony Gwynn 5.5K Run and Walk on Saturday, June 17.

Held over Father’s Day weekend, the family-friendly event is open to the public and raises money to benefit the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation, which works to create a positive culture and environment for underprivileged children and young adults throughout San Diego. Emceed by Raoul Martinez of Fox 5, the race starts and ends at AleSmith’s brewery, the course winding its way through the streets of Miramar. The distance of the race is a reference to the space between third base and shortstop where Tony Gwynn was known to hit balls and dubbed the “5.5 hole.” Tony Gwynn Jr. will also join to help kick off the festivities.

Each participant will receive an official race-day shirt, a custom bottle opener “finisher’s” medal and a beer ticket (non-alcoholic beverages available for designated drivers and participants under 21). Prizes will be awarded to the top three men and women finishers.

Additional activities include a beer garden, live musical performance by Alicia Gwynn, silent auction and kids’ zone with 200-meter dash, tee-ball station, climbing wall and live music by local band the Wee Heavies and School of Rock. The Tony Gwynn Museum, housing hundreds of items of Tony Gwynn memorabilia donated by the Gwynn family, will be open for viewing inside the AleSmith Tasting Room.

To coincide with the race, AleSmith will reintroduce its Hall of Fame Imperial San Diego Pale Ale .394, a high-octane interpretation of the original AleSmith San Diego Pale Ale .394 released in 2014. Race participants registered at the “Major League” or “Hall of Fame” levels will be eligible to get their hands on a bottle before it reaches distribution. Net proceeds from sales of the 22 oz. bombers benefit the Tony and Alicia Gwynn Foundation.
